8 Ways to Make a Room Look Larger

Don’t be afraid of a little color or bold pattern.

A modern, bold geometric patterned wallpaper or stencil can really amplify a space and make it seem more expansive than it really is. Try it on an accent wall leaving the other walls a neutral color, and accessorize with bright colors sprinkled strategically throughout the room. If you have a small bathroom, a bright color can really make it pop.

Place mirrors strategically for the illusion of more space.

Mirrors in a room add an elegant touch, but they also reflect light, making a small room appear larger. Placing mirrors across from windows not only reflect the most light, but give the illusion of added depth. When placed on either side of a headboard, mirrors can make the room look wider.

Use light neutral colors in living spaces.

We’re talking light grays, beiges, greiges, white, and even soft neutral traditional colors (ask your paint specialist for samples). These colors have a light, airy feel to them and will help open up any room. An added plus, this neutral space will make it easier for some buyers to imagine their furniture and personal belongings in that room.

Hang shelves near the ceiling.

It might seem awkward at first, but a perfectly placed shelf can draw the eyes upward, giving you the illusion of high ceilings. Start with your first shelf high, and work your way down from there. Make sure the shelves are not cluttered as this will immediately make the room feel less spacious.

Use curtains in lieu of blinds.

The goal is to bring in more light which will make the room seem larger. Hanging curtains

closer to the ceiling will help add height to the room as well.

A dramatic art piece can make a huge impact.

A large piece of bold art hung strategically on the wall as a focal point will attract attention and draw the eye away from how small a room may be.

Use rugs to define spaces.

Using a few different sized rugs in one large space can make it seem like you have several distinct spaces. Use rugs to define a dining room, sitting area, office, etc.

Use lamps in place of overhead lights.

Ceiling lights tend to direct the focus to one small area. By placing lamps around a small room, it forces the eye to naturally move around the room giving the illusion of a larger space. As an added bonus, lamps can add an elegant ambiance to any space.

Avoiding Moving Woes

Avoiding Moving Woes It’s a timeless and universal truth: moving is no fun. Ancient Polynesian seafarers, while nervously prepping outrigger canoes for uncharted trips across the South Pacific, probably groaned in frustration when they realized at the last minute that someone forgot to pack up all the fishing gear. Sure, locating to a new place can be an exciting adventure, but the actual moving process can be stressful, costly, and full of surprises. Make your next move as smooth and simple as possible by avoiding these pitfalls: Hiring a shady mover.  Moving scams can run the gamut from bogus “moving deposits”, to bait-and-switch estimates, to overly-complicated contracts designed to nullify mover liability. You can steer clear of a less-than-upstanding mover by doing your homework. The Better Business Bureau, Angie's List, your state transportation regulator, and the U.S. Department of Transportation - and even your relatives, friends and neighbors - are all good sources of in
